The theme for the International Architecture Biënnale Rotterdam 2014 was Urban by Nature. We proposed a bamboo structure that is slowly overgrowing the main streets of the city. In this structure the inhabitants can create their own or collective urban space.
The bamboo is grown on the vacant plots in the city of Rotterdam and shipped to the West-Blaak in rafts of bamboo. The benefit of bamboo are evident: it’s the fastest growing tree in the world and it absorbs five times more CO2 than any other three.
